Services: Legionellosis risk assessments

Legionnaires’ Disease: The Health and Safety Commissions ACoP L8

Legionnaires’ Disease: The Health & Safety Commissions ACoP L8

This code of practice was released by the HSC in 2001 and its requirements state that before maintenance procedures can be implemented a full and thorough risk assessment must be carried out.

ACoP L8 requires that employers and those with responsibility for premises must:

a) Identify and Assess the sources of risk
b) Prepare a written scheme for preventing or controlling the risk.
c) Implement, monitor and manage the precautions.
d) Appoint a person to be managerially responsible.
e) Keep records for a period of 5 years
f) Have adequate training and resources

The cornerstone upon which a good control scheme is built is therefore the Legionellosis risk assessment

This should be carried out by a ‘trained competent person’ and will

- identify and assess the sources of risk;
- include a written scheme for controlling the risk;
- will include a schematic layout of the water systems (if not already present);
- include recommendations on required remedial works
- list prioritised actions to minimise the risk.
