Risk Assessment
Services: Legionellosis Risk Assessments
Legionnaires’ Disease: The Health and Safety Commissions ACoP L8.
This code of practice was released by the HSC in 2001 and its requirements state that before maintenance procedures can be implemented a full and thorough risk assessment must be carried out. ACoP L8 requires that employers and those with responsibility for premises must:
- Identify and assess the sources of risk.
- Prepare a written scheme for preventing or controlling the risk.
- Implement, monitor and manage the precautions.
- Appoint a person to be managerially responsible.
- Keep records for a period of 5 years.
- Have adequate training and resources.
The cornerstone upon which a good control scheme is built is therefore the Legionellosis Risk Assessment. This should be carried out by a ‘trained competent person’. Competence is defined as a combination of training and experience. All of our Risk Assessors are trained to City & Guilds Standard. We always ensure that the Risk Assessor appointed to carry out this duty will have experience commensurate with the complexity of that particular industry sector and property type.
The Assessor will:
- identify and assess the sources of risk;
- include a control scheme for monitoring the risk;
- include a schematic layout of the water systems (if not already present and if requested by the client);
- include recommendations on required remedial works;
- list prioritised actions to minimise the risk, with appropriate timescales.
All legionella risk assessments conform to the BS 8580:2010 standard, "Water quality - risk assessments for Legionella control.”
Increasingly the format of these Risk Assessments is electronic in nature and based upon a client web-based access, to enable more efficient management of non-conformances and remedial actions required.
ChemTech Consultancy also carry out specific Legionella Risk Assessments for Emergency Safety Showers, Eyebath and Facewash Fountains. Survey is carried out to ensure compliance with the American National Standard ANSI Z 358.1 2009 which is the internationally recognised world standard covering the design parameters for Emergency Safety Showers, Eyebath and Facewash Fountains.
In addition, ChemTech Consultancy are able to provide Risk Assessments in paper, PDF or CD format if preferred.
